What Inspires Me About Photography
Photography is a living, breathing medium, and a global vernacular that is accessible regardless of education, status, race, or viewpoint. Through photography, I am able to capture life and all that it encompasses - those rare, fleeting moments that are offered to me alone, simply because I am fortunate enough to be here in this particular time and place to receive such gifts. I am able to take away those moments that show how the world is unfolding in my time, and express aspects of it that offer an immediate emotional connection to the world. Because humans are, first and foremost, emotional creatures, photography often breaks through barriers that words cannot.
Good photography will stop me in my tracks with its initial impact - something that makes me stand still and really look at it at least one time. Truly excellent photography will draw me back again and again, and I will see something new each time I view it - some vulnerability or hidden aspect of the subject. I am especially inspired by photographs that take something ordinary, perhaps a scene that I drive by every single day without noticing, and project it in a unique way that makes me see with more than just my eyes. A single striking image can even change the course of history.
My own photography inspires me each time I get behind the camera to put more of myself and my personal experience into the act, hopefully producing an image that will not only speak to the viewer about the subject, but will also whisper something about the photographer, creating a more powerful, moving, and, above all, lasting collective experience.
