Photo sighting!I just learned this afternoon that there are two stories on ESPN.com which use my sports photos from University of Northern Iowa. It's always so much fun to see my work appear in unexpected places. Enjoy! Des Moines Register - Sports PhotosThe Des Moines Register picked up 3 of my photos from the University of Northern Iowa Panthers final home baseball game. One photo was printed on the front of the Sunday sports section on May 17, and that same photo plus 2 others were published online. Tibetan Sand MandalaThis past week, I had the pleasure of meeting a group of Tibetan monks and scholars who were visiting the campus of University of Northern Iowa to construct a sand mandala. I also had the incredible honor of photographing the construction of the mandala from the first grain of sand to the very last. It was the most amazing and moving experience I have had to date as a photographer. Information about the monks' visit, the construction of the mandala, and a photo gallery of the experience can be found at the University of Northern Iowa website: Iowa Supreme Court legalizes gay marriageDES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa's Supreme Court legalized gay marriage Friday in a unanimous and emphatic decision that makes Iowa the third state — and first in the nation's heartland — to allow same-sex couples to wed. ADDY AwardsI won a Gold ADDY award for my photography work on the 2009 UNI Alumni Calendar. CASE Award WinnerI won a Silver District CASE award for my photography work on the 2009 UNI Alumni Calendar. |
What Inspires Me About Photography
Photography is a living, breathing medium, and a global vernacular that is accessible regardless of education, status, race, or viewpoint. Through photography, I am able to capture life and all that it encompasses - those rare, fleeting moments that are offered to me alone, simply because I am fortunate enough to be here in this particular time and place to receive such gifts. I am able to take away those moments that show how the world is unfolding in my time, and express aspects of it that offer an immediate emotional connection to the world. Because humans are, first and foremost, emotional creatures, photography often breaks through barriers that words cannot. Good photography will stop me in my tracks with its initial impact - something that makes me stand still and really look at it at least one time. Truly excellent photography will draw me back again and again, and I will see something new each time I view it - some vulnerability or hidden aspect of the subject. I am especially inspired by photographs that take something ordinary, perhaps a scene that I drive by every single day without noticing, and project it in a unique way that makes me see with more than just my eyes. A single striking image can even change the course of history. My own photography inspires me each time I get behind the camera to put more of myself and my personal experience into the act, hopefully producing an image that will not only speak to the viewer about the subject, but will also whisper something about the photographer, creating a more powerful, moving, and, above all, lasting collective experience. |
